Randy Brown is Chief Investment Officer for Sun Life and Head of Insurance Asset Management for SLC Management.
Randy joined Sun Life at the start of 2016 and has more than three decades of investment management expertise at highly-respected global financial firms. Randy has held senior roles at Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management, most recently as Global Head of insurance and Pension Solutions and as Head of Asset and Wealth Management for the UK region.
Previously, he was Co-Chief Investment Officer of Deutsche Asset Management, responsible for a global investment staff of 750 and total assets of $1.2 trillion. Before the integration of Deutsche’s asset management and wealth management businesses, Randy was the head of its investment operations managing money for insurance companies, with more than $200 billion of assets under management.
Randy’s portfolio of work also includes senior roles in portfolio management at BlackRock and Morgan Stanley & Company and Salomon Brothers.
Randy holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees, both in Electrical Engineering, from Cornell University. He also earned an MBA from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he was a Lester B. Knight Scholar.
Chief Investment Officer, U.S. Total Return Fixed Income
Richard Familetti is Chief Investment Officer, U.S. Total Return Fixed Income at SLC Management.
Richard joined Ryan Labs Asset Management, which now operates under SLC Management, in 2009. Richard has over 25 years of industry experience, and he most recently served as Ryan Labs Asset Management’s President and CIO. In his current role, he leads the portfolio management team who invest on behalf of SLC Management’s U.S. pension asset management clients. Richard and his team have extensive experience specializing in corporate credit and fixed income asset allocation. They cover all sectors of the fixed income markets employing a combination of fundamental and technical analysis.
Richard’s portfolio of work includes senior portfolio management positions at Halbis Capital Management, Calyon Bank, Credit Suisse Asset Management (the result of the sale of a small, successful partnership called Brundage, Story and Rose, Investment Management), and Lazard Freres Asset Management.
Richard holds a B.A. from Hofstra University and an M.B.A. from Fordham University. He is a CFA Charterholder.
Portfolio Manager & Head of Public Fixed Income
Doug Gardiner is Portfolio Manager and Head of Public Fixed Income for SLC Management.
Doug joined Sun Life in 2001 and became Head of Canadian and U.K. Public Fixed Income in 2007. When Sun Life Investment Management launched in 2014, Doug added Portfolio Manager, Public Fixed Income and Derivatives for the growing third-party business, to his mandate.
Doug has over 30 years of industry experience. In his current role, Doug oversees investment activities in the public fixed income and derivatives markets for Canadian pension asset management clients including Sun Life’s general account portfolios in Canada, as well as the U.S. and U.K. Doug leads a team of over 45 investment professionals who manage approximately $69 billion of public fixed income assets and $54 billion notional of derivatives. Doug also oversees the Credit Research team who support the investment teams responsible for Canadian and U.S. insurance and pension asset management.
Doug’s portfolio of work in financial services spans investment management, product development, and financial planning. Prior to joining Sun Life, Doug advanced through roles at Confederation Life, eventually completing his tenure overseeing the public fixed income trading operations.
Doug holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Concordia University. He is a CFA Charterholder and a member of the Toronto CFA Society.
Portfolio Manager & Head of Private Fixed Income
Candace Shaw is Portfolio Manager and Head of Private Fixed Income for SLC Management.
Candace oversees an extensive team of professionals who manage one of the largest private fixed income portfolios in North America, comprising private debt, mid-market loans, project finance loans private securitizations and private real estate finance across a variety of industries.
Candace joined Sun Life in 1987, and quickly progressed through investment positions in the company’s Canadian, UK and Corporate operations. Candace has significant investment experience in addressing Sun Life’s invested asset portfolio and other credit-related activities as well as the management of investment portfolios, investment teams and governance functions.
Her portfolio of work includes Chief Credit Risk Officer, where she played a critical role in the credit risk management of all credit assets, including private fixed income investments. Candace and her team of 22 credit, asset liability management, and market risk professionals were responsible for a credit portfolio of approximately $110 billion, as well as a real estate portfolio of approximately $8 billion.
Prior to becoming the Chief Credit Risk Officer, Candace was Senior Managing Director, Portfolio Management and International Investments. In this dual role, Candace was responsible for developing portfolio strategies and best practices for Sun Life ’s worldwide invested assets as well as overseeing the company’s international investment operations outside North America. Candace was responsible for the North American bond portfolio of approximately $60 Billion.
Candace holds a B.A. in Mathematics and an Honours B.Sc. in Chemistry from Queen’s University. She obtained her MBA in Finance from Queen’s University in 1987. Candace received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1991 and is a member of the Association of Investment Management and Research and the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts.
President, U.S. Private Fixed Income
Sam Tillinghast is Head of U.S. Private Fixed Income for SLC Management.
With 30 years of experience as a private credit investor, Sam leads a team of investment professionals focused on sourcing and developing private credit opportunities in the U.S. This includes broadening and deepening relationships with third-party clients, issuers, bankers, private equity sponsors and other participants in the private credit market.
Sam’s portfolio of work includes his most recent role as Co-Chief Executive Officer of THL Credit Advisors, an $11 billion alternative credit manager that he co-founded in 2007 as the credit affiliate of the private equity firm, Thomas H. Lee Partners. Sam was Head of the Private Placement Group for AIG where he had responsibility for investment grade corporate privates, middle market leveraged lending, private securitizations, and project finance. Sam joined AIG with the acquisition of SunAmerica Inc. in 1999, and was responsible for leading the integration of the private credit teams from AIG, SunAmerica and American General in 2001. Sam led the growth of the AIG private debt portfolio from $14 billion in 2001 to approximately $28 billion in 2006.
Sam previously served as a member of the board of directors for THL Credit Advisors, LLC, THL Credit, Inc. (a publicly held business development company), Copperweld Bimetallics LLC, Dimont & Associates, Inc., Loadmaster Derrick & Equipment, Inc., and OEM Group, Inc.
Sam earned his MBA in Accounting and Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin and his Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of South Alabama.
Chief Investment Officer, Insurance Asset Management
Marc Tollefson is Chief Investment Officer, Insurance Asset Management for SLC Management.
Marc joined Prime Advisors, Inc. which now operates under SLC Management, in 2004, serving as a member of the senior executive team until 2018, when he was appointed President. In his current role, Marc oversees the investment activities for SLC Management’s insurance asset management clients in the U.S., which includes evaluating securities and constructing and administering portfolios.
Marc’s portfolio of work includes 35 years of securities trading experience in multiple markets, including municipals, corporates, U.S. governments, agencies, swaps, money markets and futures contracts. Marc managed long municipal portfolios for Quellos Fixed Income Advisors, and was Head Bond Trader with GE Financial Assurance, where he managed a group of corporate bond traders positioned in both high-yield and investment grade corporates and executed over $30 billion in trades.
Marc holds a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Puget Sound.
