Candace (Candy) Shaw is Senior Managing Director, Deputy Chief Investment Officer (CIO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO).
As Deputy CIO, Candy helps lead the portfolio management team in developing the strategic asset mix that supports the liabilities of Sun Life Financial’s general account, in order to position the portfolio for optimal risk-adjusted performance. As COO, she is responsible for leading the team that assesses SLC Management’s end-to-end business processes for efficiency, client centricity and scale. She takes a holistic lens across the SLC Fixed Income business and its functional areas, leading key operational and technology decisions that will help enable future growth. Candy ensures that SLC Management’s fixed income operating model continually serves the needs of the firm’s growing client base.
Prior to her appointment in 2020 to Deputy CIO, Candy was Portfolio Manager and Head of Private Fixed Income at SLC Management. In that role, she led an extensive team of professionals who manage one of the largest private fixed income portfolios in North America. Her portfolio of work also includes Chief Credit Risk Officer, where she played a critical role in the risk management of all credit assets, including private fixed income investments.
In addition to her professional accolades, Candy has also been instrumental in helping foster and embed a culture of inclusion within SLC Management and more broadly across the asset management industry. She currently serves as Executive Sponsor for InvestHer, an employee-led network whose objective is to help advance career development within the asset management industry, and previously acted as chair for SLC Management’s Allies Acting for Change (AAFC), an internal grassroots group that helps drive important initiatives firmwide.
Candy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and an Honors Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Queen’s University. She obtained her MBA in Finance from Queen’s University in 1987. Candy received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1991 and is a member of the Association of Investment Management and Research and the Toronto Society of Financial Analysts.
